I’ve been having a really rough week. Between finals, and feeling overwhelmed and the person I count on to make sure I eat and that the cats eat being out of town on business for another two weeks, it’s been really hard. I haven’t been sleeping well, and I’ve spent most of the week just trying not to let the panic get me. For the most part, thanks to a pretty spectacular support system, it’s working. I have no idea how I managed for years without people who pick me up for dinner or spend the evening watching Drag Race with me.

This morning I woke up feeling like I just need one more burst of energy to push through this week. To motivate myself, I thought perhaps I needed to dress the part. I have a friend, who runs Black Salt who looks effortlessly edgy every single day. The superhero/supervillain I would be aspires to that. So, in order to kick this week’s ass, I decided to channel her, and so I’m borrowing fierceness. It inspired me to drag out my tripod, so at least that’s a start. Now, if only I can find the remote for my camera.

Difficult pieces

Sweater – H&M
Leggings – Black Milk
Skirt – Modcloth
Belt – H&M
Necklace – gift
Boots – Aldo

I bought this skirt from Modcloth on clearance and on a whim. I figured that at $17 I could find a way to make it work. It’s been 3 weeks, and I finally decided to take on the challenge (mostly because I needed to distract my thoughts away from dressing around a sweater I haven’t received yet). The cutouts on the skirt are fantastic, but it’s completely unwearable without an under layer. I’ve been incorporating more black into my wardrobe, which has been as much of a challenge for me as I feel incorporating color is for other people. I have a backlog of outfits I’ll post this weekend, but for today, I’m giddy that I managed to make this one work.

New hair makes everything better

Cardigan – H&M
Dress – H&M
Scarf – gift from my mom
Bosch trypitch Leggings – Black Milk
Boots – Vince Camuto

I got my hair cut on Sunday, and I finally felt confident enough to go actually edgy. This makes me think that putting an effort into what I’m wearing is actually doing wonders for my confidence. This outfit isn’t especially inspired, it was also my first day back to full time work and school, so I’m cutting myself some slack. I’m still trying to figure out picture taking, I think I need to set up a spot for my tripod in my office.

All the orange!

Gingham shirt- Gap
Dress – H&M
Leggings – Black Milk
Shoes – Mia Girl
Necklace – Juicy (gift from a spectacular former boss)

As much as I love orange, I still can’t decide if this outfit actually worked or not. I didn’t spend the day being concerned that I looked awful, but I didn’t feel like it was perfect either. These leggings were way harder than I expected to pair with anything. Also, I am in a bit of style formula rut this month, but vacation should give me enough time to properly think about outfit ideas again.

Dressing for a Tuesday

Dress – Black Milk Clothing
Leggings – Black Milk Clothing
Blazer – H&M
Boots – Vince Camuto

I have a meeting with my boss today, and I’m getting together with a group of former coworkers after work, so I dressed up a bit more than I was planning to. I also realized that I don’t seem to own any necklaces that don’t make statements, whoops! This outfit feels a bit lazy, and I didn’t wear black boots because I haven’t broken them in yet, but at least I look presentable.

*sidenote- I feel like it’s going to take me forever to find a blog voice I’m comfortable with, this is way harder than just collages

Lazy colors

Today was my first day back after having my wisdom teeth out, so lazy it is! I promise I’m setting up my tripod for good pictures this week.

Instagram fashion blogging

In the 5 months since I last posted, I got married, I went back to school full time (while still working full time and dealing with some huge changes in our department) and suddenly had no time at all for thinking about anything but remembering to eat dinner (with a 75% success rate on that).

In the middle of October, I decided that I would put a bit more effort into my wardrobe lest I end up going to work in tshirts and yoga pants. One of my goals is to get my tripod set up for outfit pictures by Thanksgiving, when I have an exciting 4 days off from both school and work. Meanwhile, I have been posting on instagram every day- so here’s a slice of what I’ve looked most every day since I cut all my hair off.

Who knew how much work this was?

I recognize that there are at least 3 pieces I need to work on in order to make this project effective.

First, I need to learn how to model better. I’m not used to taking outfit pictures, and I am clearly not in my comfort zone yet. I’m bookmarking this tutorial on A Beautiful Mess to give me some inspiration and ideas rather than me just standing around looking somewhat silly. I’m also thinking that I really like the idea of wearing some lip color.

Secondly, I need to work on taking pictures of everything. Last night I made a vegan version of this butternut squash and quinoa stew by not using chicken and subbing water for the chicken broth. I actually enjoyed it more than the version with chicken. I did take a lovely set-up shot with all my ingredients.

Ingredients

Lovely, and delicious looking, yes? However, I completely forgot to take a picture of the finished product. Whoops! It was good though, trust me. Next time I need to remember to take pictures of the WHOLE process. I am getting slightly more comfortable with my camera though, and that’s a huge improvement.

Last week I posted about my love of leggings, specifically those from Black Milk. As it happens, I have some on their way to me right now. This week, there was a fantastic post on the Too Many Tights! blog about leggings interventions. We Need to Have a Little Talk did a great job of explaining why it’s so easy to love buying from them.

H&M Dress

Dress – H&M

Cardigan – H&M

Belt – Banana Republic

Shoes – Jean-Michel Cazabat

Pearls – bought in Hawaii

Yesterday I thought I’d dress up a bit for work. I love this dress because there are so many colors in it that it looks completely different depending on how I accessorize. Excuse my posture, please reference “need to learn how to model” earlier.

Lastly, I really need to try to be better about actually posting. It’s a work in progress, yes?

Black Milk Leggings Friday

I have a terrible vice- Black Milk leggings. While my workplace is fairly casual, I try to dress up for most of the week. Last month, I decided that instead of casual Friday, I’d observe leggings Friday. This Friday’s choice was my Galaxy Blacks. I’ve been walking to and from work, which has resulted in significantly less heels than I’d like this year, so I wore my trusty Converse again today.
